Most people are not used to distinguish between the two ways of creating art. One is about product, the child of reason: knowledge, skills and techniques. You know what you want and how to get there before you even start, following rules and principles, applying color theory and design knowledge, where the center of interest will go, etc, etc.
There is planning, decision, comparison, effort, editing, critique, self-doubting...all the focus is in the end product. Not really enjoying the process itself.
This kind of work needs approval from others. All this leads to self- criticism (or others telling you what's wrong or what you should change in "your own painting" to be acceptable...) and fear of failure...the perfect scenario for a creative block.
And it's the same for any other creative endeavour (music, writing, etc). If you are not having fun, you have really missed the joy of creation.
Creativity at root is fun!!!
When you paint from "freedom", with no pressures or demands of an expected outcome, you enter a state of pure creation, becoming intertwined with your painting; it tells you where to go next...you create moment by moment...as long as you keep your mind out of this process.
In this way you find passion, playfulness, joy, grounding, healing and connection to you true self.
Process Painting is a very simple and direct way to discover your creative potential and will keep you returning to the process again and again, realizing the most important aspect of this journey: The Process itself!
If you are a Visual Artist, Process Painting can take your Product Paintings to the next level. Just start in a Spontaneous-Intuitive way, be willing to take risks, experiment with unfamiliar techniques and be your own judge.
